Hate College Papers? The Clever Way to Write a College Paper in a Millisecond

Let's face it all of us have less and less time to do all the things that need to be done in a day. Do teachers understand that? Nope!

Writing a paper for school need not be a chore when you can pick up some hot tips right here on how to write a paper in less time. Get that A or B in less time than it takes to get that C or D grade. I will show you how I was able to write 5 and 7 page papers in under 2 hours. Want to know how I got an A in a class that required me to read books with 300 pages or more and write a 5 page paper every week?... and guess what? I never read any of the books.

Read Below

Writing a great paper for school is not all that hard. Trust me I was in school longer than I wanted to be but in my entire college career I never received less than a B on a paper and that was for the papers I was not too excited about. So for all you college students out there I will reveal some of my tricks of the trade.

First, most college students write incredibly horrible papers. So, you have an advantage from the get-go because your professors will be relieved not to be reading garbage if you even write clearly. Okay now that all of that is out of the way you can stop being scared about papers. Now, for that infamous class that I took: the 7 books with 300 pages or more to read in a week and write a paper due at 12 midnight Sunday... while I was working full time and! taking four other classes! in a shortened summer semester. My idea of hell times two.

So, you know I had to come up with a system for banging out papers in less time, skipping reading the boring books on history and getting an A in the class.

What I did:

1. You don't have to read the book to know what it's about.

If you are familiar with the theme of the book do this: Read the Table of Contents, The first and last paragraphs of every chapter, and try to read the last chapter as much as possible. This is where the author summarizes the book generally. Also, go over the index or glossary so you know what kinds of words are used in the book so that when it comes time to write the paper you can use those words in the paper to make it sound like you actually read the book.

By reading the first and last part of any chapter you will know first what argument the author is making and the last paragraph tends to reveal their complete thoughts on an entire chapter. It's like a mini summary of an entire chapter.

2. Outline your paper on a scratch piece of paper

It's easy: First, in one sentence write what your paper is about at the top. If that one sentence does not describe your entireeeee paper keep revising that one sentence until it does. This is the gold of the paper. Trust me, it's the most important sentence. Only one sentence! and not a word more. Now that one sentence is the seed of the whole paper. Think of your paper as a tree. Every paragraph has to grow off that one sentence. Like car is to tire as leaf is to tree.

3. Sketch the Tree

Now, write one sentence or word for each paragraph that is the essence of each particular paragraph that you are going to write. So, now you should have a sketch paper that looks like bullet points. Glance over the bullets to make sure they are reasonably related to what your paper is going to be about and move the bullets around if you need to in order to make sure your paper has good order. When the bullet points have good order this is vaguely what we would call good "flow" to a paper.

4. Fill out your paper.

Go into the book and pick out points or facts as many as you need for each paragraph that match or support each paragraphs bullet point sentence. Do it this way. Look in the index for words related to each paragraph that you are going to write. Go back in the book to the specified pages that the index tells you to go to and find facts or points that support each paragraph. Write the facts or points of interest down under the appropriate paragraph that you sketched out earlier in bullet points.

Don't forget to write down the page numbers!! If you need it for some kind of reference page at the end of your paper!

5. Write the Paper

Now, Flesh out your paper by quickly writing about each topic sentence for all the paragraphs and also add in what you think or want to say if need be. Second, flesh out the facts or points you found for each paragraph.

6. Wrap up Your Paper

Read the paper once to make sure it sounds cool and it ends logically with a good closing paragraph. If you have time set the paper aside for an hour or a day and then come back to it and read it over again to spot any other additional things to correct. When writing it always helps to get "away" from what you are writing and clear your brain and then go back to it.

On your first paper this technique might take a bit getting used to but it sure beats hours of pulling your hair out. It will save you loads of time too in getting papers completed.

I hope you enjoyed this article and to your success!

p.s. DON'T forget to run your paper through a (spell checker) guys.

Why White Papers Are Not Sale Brochures

Many businesses are turning to White Papers as part of their Marketing communication strategy. Unfortunately many of them seem to have the wrong idea about what constitutes a White Paper. For a large number of companies it seems that their White Papers are really extended sales brochures. As Steve Hoffman writes in a recent Marketing Profs White Paper, "White papers are not marketing collateral," he says. "They complement marketing collateral.", He goes on to state " A 'white paper' that actively markets your company to readers is nothing more than a long, wordy brochure."

However, many companies just don't seem to understand this and continue to produce White Papers that truly don't meet this criteria. Lets examine the reasons why a company would engage in the creation of a White Paper.

The intention to position their company as Subject Matter Experts with regard to a particular service, product or technology
To differentiate themselves from their competitors by sharing knowledge
To drive traffic and/or leads to their website
To reinforce or create an impression with prospects and clients that they are a trusted voice in their industry
To introduce a new concept, solution or technology to the market

These are not by any means the only reason why a company would seek to publish a White Paper but they certainly constitute the most popular reasons. Now given that a company is going to commit time, money and resources to this endeavor with the hopes of meeting at least one, if not more of the aims above then it would seem reasonable that some consideration of the readership, both intended and unintended would be considered.

However, that seems to be the last thing that companies consider when setting out on this path. They start and end with a focus on selling their product and in doing so hamstring their endeavor before it has even started.

Lets examine a typical White Paper from cover to cover and review how so many companies are producing them and make suggestions about how they can do them better.

The cover - Often produced as an after thought, this is where the trouble starts. A large Logo emblazoned on the front of the White Paper, immediately announcing that this is the product of a particular company. Then a title that also includes the company name, e.g. "ABC's Solution to your Problem". A reader seeing this has already put up their anti-sales barriers, that's if they even bother to go any further. Given that most companies ask you to complete a short info form before you can download a White Paper, the reader is now feeling cheated, they have given out their email address and name and possibly other information on the pretext of being given some valuable information, only to find that they are in fact going to be sold to.

The Alternative - Move your logo - if you must in fact include your logo on the front page, and I am by no means supporting that, to a greatly reduced size to the bottom of the front page, precede it with "Sponsored by" or "Provided by". In place of the Logo put a title that fairly represents the content of the paper, it doesn't have to be bland, it can be catchy but it must most importantly be relevant and should not under any circumstances include the company name. Make sure that the author(s) names are on the front page so that people have some sense of who wrote the paper, include their position or expertise.

The content - Having opened the White Paper the reader is then told how they are going to read in this paper that ABC's solution is the only one they need to consider. They are told how not considering ABC's solution will in fact lead them into dire straits, financial ruin, or end their career. That everyone who is anyone in the industry is already using this solution and that only buyers who truly lack vision would be considering anything else. This may seem extreme but I can honestly say I have seen just these tactics used in what was supposed to be a White Paper. Using fear or other "sales" tactics in a White Paper not only doesn't work, its completely inappropriate for the medium. Using unsupported claims is also pointless, again these leave the reader feeling that they have downloaded a sales brochure and are unlikely to get any useful information from this paper.

The Alternative - Make the content compelling. Tell a story, that doesn't mean fictionalize it, it means have a narrative thread that runs throughout the paper. Lead the reader through your arguments with facts that support your position. Where possible cite studies or quote industry figures that agree with and support your position. Use images where appropriate, but not so many that the paper becomes more like a graphic novel than a White Paper. Leave out any mention of your company. This is the hardest pill for most companies to swallow. "How will the reader know about us", they ask. We'll get to the part where you get to pitch, but it isn't in the body of the White Paper. Provide some proprietary information, give the reader something that they would have to have paid for to get normally. Perhaps its from a study that is only available by subscription (be sure to source it properly) or perhaps its from the companies own data. Many companies fear doing this - "what if our competitors get this information?", what if they do? Obviously don't include something that would remove your competitive edge, but revealing some information, even if it goes to your competitors is more likely to strengthen your position than weaken it. So where does the pitch go ? At the very back of the paper, separate page, separate heading, so that it is clearly not part of the paper. A heading like "About the Sponsors" gives the reader a clear indication that this is the pitch part, it gives them the opportunity to read it or not, but it also allows them to clearly delineate in their minds the meat of the paper and the sales pitch, which is more likely to have them read the pitch because after all, you have given them something useful, now they are more likely to give you something back - their time.

The Readership - just because the paper was written with a specific reader in mind, new prospects, existing customers etc. doesn't mean that is who will read it. White Papers are used by a variety of sources, competitors, market researchers, journalists, and yes new prospects and existing customers. If a White Paper reads like a sales brochure, provides no new information, doesn't offer a genuine insight and relevant data to a reader how does this meet the defined objectives? Will a company be seen as an industry subject matter expert, will it drive new prospects to a website, will existing customers think of the company as a trusted industry voice, will journalists or market researchers think of them when they next need a quote about the industry?

As a recap, avoid selling in a white paper at all costs, make the body engaging, provide facts that the reader can use, be subtle about the branding of white papers and keep in mind the wider audience that you might reach however unintentionally.

Hot New Specialty Inkjet Printer Papers For Crafts and Scrapbooking

Inkjet printers are becoming the most popular home computer printers. In contrast to a laser printer, which uses high heat to fuse powdered ink to a material like paper, an inkjet printer sprays a fine pattern of liquid ink. Without the need for heat, an inkjet printer can print on a far wider range of materials, from the delicate to the metallic. The primary quality of these materials must be their ability to absorb and hold an inked image without bleeding or spreading.

Inkjet paper is designed especially for inkjet printers. Like any paper, its many varieties are generally classified by weight, brightness, texture, and opacity. Basic inkjet office paper weight ranges from 21 to 27 lbs, and is most suitable for printing text. The amount of ink required to print a photo, however, can soak and buckle these lightweight papers. Photo paper is heavy and very opaque, even to the point where it can be printed on both sides without the images showing through.

That is why your home inkjet printer has settings (usually found under "properties" or "configuration" when printing) for the type of paper or material you are using. The printer will decrease the amount of ink it sprays to compensate for lighter-weight paper, and adjust the image colors to suit the opacity or transparency of your paper.

Yes, you can keep printing on your basic white office paper, but perhaps it is time to live a little! Here are just some of the new options available for your inkjet printer:

Photo Paper: Papers formulated for photo printing can be any weight or thickness, but they share a high opacity. The best quality photographic prints can generally be achieved with thicker papers, with a glossy finish that make photo colors more vivid. Photo papers are primarily distinguished by their surface coatings; glossy or matte. Gloss coatings are shiny and very light-reflective, with quick-drying properties to prevent the ink from smearing. Matte surfaces are flat and low-gloss. Bridging the gap are semi-gloss and luster papers.

Textured Paper: Many new inkjet papers have a textured finish, such as linen weave or canvas, which will give your finished prints a distinctive look.

Fabric Sheets: In the past, the only way for the home crafter to transfer an image to fabric was to print the image on a heat-transfer medium and then iron the medium onto the fabric. Today, you can print directly on fabric using paper-backed fabric sheets in your inkjet printer. After printing, the paper backing is removed. The fabric is generally lightweight cotton, linen, satin or silk - and a shade of white. The color of the fabric is important. Inkjet printers do not print white ink, so the white parts of your image will be the color of your fabric. Also, be aware that special photo inks in your printer will not produce as vivid an image on fabric as standard inks.

Fusible Fabric Sheets: A variation on fabric sheets, this fabric is backed with a heat activated adhesive. Print your image, trim, and iron it onto apparel, fabric crafts, scrapbooks or any flat surface for a custom applique effect.

Translucent Vellum: Vellum is a translucent paper that imitates the qualities of animal-skin parchment. Vellum is a crafter's secret weapon for achieving layering and light effects. When printing on vellum, consider how light or background will show through your image. If the image will be transmitting light, try configuring your printer for "transparency" paper, because that will deposit more ink and adjust the colors to be more vivid against a light source.

Metallic Papers: Special metallic paper surfaces can accept inkjet printing. Finishes are generally low-gloss and include color variations of gold, silver and copper. Some also have self-adhesive backing.

Transparency: The problem with inkjet printing on standard transparency material (overhead projector sheets) is that the ink smears on the non-absorbent surface. Now, special transparency sheets have been created with a fine texture that holds the ink, preventing smearing or smudging. Be sure to use the "transparency" setting on your printer to adjust the inking and color.

Magnetic Paper: Create refrigerator magnets, organizational systems, calendars, and magnetic advertising cards by printing directly on this lightweight (11 mils) magnetic material.

Specialty Sizes: We think the world is created in 8 1/2" X 11" or A4 rectangles, but there are many other sizes of inkjet paper. You can print directly on greeting cards or envelopes of all sizes. Sheets of pre-scored or perforated business cards, name stickers, tags and other shapes are available.

Waterproof Outdoor Paper: For outdoor use, consider vinyl-coated inkjet sheets that are water-resistant.

Transferring Images to Other Surfaces

Heat Transfer Paper: Images printed on transfer paper can be transferred to a surface like fabric by applying heat and pressure, usually with an iron (hence the common name of Iron-On Transfer). The image must be printed in reverse (mirror image) so it is transferred correctly. The end result is a rubbery or stiff film on the surface of the fabric, with generally sharp and vivid colors.

Peel-and-Stick Adhesive Paper: Here is a nifty shortcut for crafters and scrapbookers. Print directly on a peel-and-stick sheet, trim your images, peel off the backing and apply your images directly. There are even self-adhesive fabric sheets for making fabric stickers.

Decal Papers: Also known as "water slide decals," an image is printed on a transparent film that is then removed from the paper and adhered to a surface with water. This is especially good for uneven or natural surfaces, pottery, ceramics and glass.

Rub-On Transfers: Similar to decals, this paper produces an image on a transparent film that can be transferred to a surface with pressure.

Temporary Tattoos: Yes, you can actually buy water slide decal "tattoo paper" for your inkjet printer, to personalize your body for every occasion.

These are some of the hottest new printables to be developed for your inkjet printer. Most of them can be found at your local stationer, craft or quilting store, or online from craft suppliers or manufacturers. Experiment on your next craft or scrapbook project. You may discover that your inkjet printer and your imagination can be best friends.

Sample Term Papers

If you browse through web pages, you will notice a lot of research and writing companies offering sample papers for view by students. The genuine purpose of such sample papers is let students use the papers to make obvious and perk up their level of expertise.

What usually obtains is that most students get the topic for their intended term papers ahead of time and wait till the last minute before research can be started. This is when complete reliance on sample papers comes in. The student should know that the purpose behind writing term paper samples is to lure you into buying what they have prepared. A prudent student does not have to pay for a sample paper. Take note that although it is provided for free, you may end up paying for it if you are idle. One thing about this paper is that not every aspect of the paper will be open to the students. Just like in books advertised online, only certain portions of the paper will be exposed. For example, the introduction and the conclusion will be given to you. You will have a short feel of the term paper and this will serve as an inducement for you to purchase the whole term paper.

You should also know that any prudent writer will never provide you with a complete sample term paper. They give out nothing for free. If you are provided with a complete sample paper, keep in mind that this is the work of upcoming writing services that will use this as a tool to get into the market. They are aware of the fact that you do not yet know their real value and you are still in doubt of what they can give. The only ways through which they can successfully do this are to provide free term papers for you.

It is also important to know the source of these term papers. This will be difficult because if you think you do not have the time to write a paper of your own, it will equally mean you will not have the time to refer to the sources listed in the paper.

Sample term papers should be strictly weighed side by side with the issue of plagiarism. Any prudent student will not even look at a sample paper. There are lots and lots of students viewing these term papers. Therefore, if you are attempting to rely on the sample paper, take note that it might already have been published by another student. If for example you will want your paper to be published in a periodical, you will be shocked by the fact that your intended paper has already been published by another researcher. What I would advise is that you should take your time as a student and sacrifice your efforts to get to a good paper. There is no easy path to success. You can borrow from a sample paper. But make sure that what you are taking from it is genuine and also credit this source from which you take. However, there are still excellent research and writing services that will be able to offer excellent terms papers to students.

Getting Technical With Inkjet Photo Papers

There has always been some confusion as what can be called inkjet photo papers. At times we hear that from our customers and we often read it online. Some papers are described as photo quality papers others as photo papers and some as premium photo paper etc. In this article we intend to get technical and highlight the different qualities of the papers with the distinguishing characteristics. Once you have this information at hand, the choice of which paper to buy should be easier.

There are 4 main types of papers:

The Very Basic Bond Papers: This paper is normally packed in reams of 500 sheets in a paper wrapping. The paper is normally between 80-100 gsm (grams per square metre). This type of paper is universal for both laser and inkjet printing and not suitable for inkjet quality image printing, however for letters and other office document printing it makes a wise economical choice.

Matt Coated Paper: This paper is a bond paper with a top matt coating (normally on one side only) to accommodate the ink droplet and to enhance the colour of the image.  Inkjet Matt Coated papers are between 90-200gsm and in some cases even more which may cause some problems in feeding with some desktop inkjet printers. The matt coated papers will result in a nice matt image, however still not up to standard when a photographic image is required. Coated papers are mainly used for low cost printing of images, graphics, charts and are ideal for economical professional presentations.

Photo Gloss Instant Dry (Cast Coated): The most common photo paper in the market and being sold in all  the major high street chains and websites. The instant dry (or some will skip the word; instant) is a paper with a gloss coating which is normally coated with a technology called; Cast Coating. This technology which initially started in Japan spread quickly to Europe, China, Korea and Taiwan. There are different qualities of cast coated papers and it is due to the based paper, however more due to the coating. This can be measured by vibrancy of colours, colour gamut (the ability to have all tones and sub tones of colour shown clearly on the paper) and bleeding (amount of ink the paper can handle with out colours bleeding one into the other). Because of the paper properties, Instant Dry with its low glare is ideal for outstanding photo prints and high quality presentations

Photo Microporous Premium Paper: This paper can produced in gloss or satin (semi-gloss) finish.  Normally, produced in high grad based paper of around 250gsm and more. The Microporous coating known to be the highest quality coating and use a base paper which is coated with a polypropylene resin on both sides to create stability and act as a barrier for the ink not to be absorbed into the paper. By that, preventing cockling (waves) and increase the longevity of the image. This paper, as well as, having a better image and colour definition is ideal for high quality professional photo prints. It is important to mention that there are many different types of Microporous photo papers in the market and they vary qualities.

A Limited Guide to Business Presentation Papers

Everything about how your business looks reflects on how your business works. From resumes and daily information management to proposals and presentations, your business needs to look its best in today's marketplace. In this short guide, we'll explain the products we offer and the applications for these products.

Bond paper is a high quality durable writing paper similar to old style bank paper. It gets its name from having originally been made for documents such as government bonds. In the modern business place, it is most often used for letterheads and other stationery as well as paper for electronic printers. For day to day operations, building presentation guides on a budget, and hard copies of large data, bond paper is the paper of choice. Because bond paper is in high demand, the selection comes in many sizes, colors and textures.

Paper made of linen can be very strong and crisp, which is why the United States and many other countries print their currency on paper that is made from 25% linen and 75% cotton. Most wedding invitations and commencement announcements are printed on linen paper. For an executive and exquisite look and feel, linen paper is a time-tested favorite. Irish linen paper is a pH Neutral, recycled content, chlorine free paper made from wood certified and audited to ensure it complies with environmentally sustainable practice and principles known as "Well Managed Forest Standards." It is manufactured to resemble and mimic traditional linen paper while being environmentally conscious.

Offset printing is most often used for large quantity, single run documents such as tests and newspapers. In this process, an inked image is transferred from a plate to a blank cylinder, which in turn transfers the image to the printing material as it passes between the blanket and the impression cylinder and pressure is applied. This is also called "offset lithography." Offset paper is paper that has been manufactured with properties that make the paper suitable for this process. Some of the properties include dimensional stability, resistance to curling, high surface strength, a surface free from and/or resistant to foreign particles and a high level of resistance to moisture penetration.

Finished paper is most commonly used in magazines and other publications as well as in the office as specialty printer paper for sleek, stunning presentations. Gloss Finish is a coating on paper that provides a higher reflection of light which results in a shiny appearance. Gloss coatings reduce ink absorption, which allows excellent contrast and color definition. Matte finish is a coated paper finish that is flat, not shiny like a gloss, but still keeps much of the ink from being absorbed by the paper and produces an excellent image. Dull finish is a flat finish that has been supercalendered when manufactured. Supercalendering is an additional papermaking process where the paper runs through a set of alternating steel and fiber covered rollers. Supercalendering produces a very smooth thin sheet. It is slightly smoother that a matte finish. Kromekote is a premium glossy coating. It provides an extremely flat, ultra-rich high gloss and a highly absorbent surface. Kromekote coating is most often used on digital photo paper of all densities from light bond paper to heavy, rigid cardstock.

Of course, as in other areas of business, there are some brand names that stand head and shoulders above the rest. Some of the best include Springhill offset, Kromekote coated paper, and Valley Forge paper. Presentation is a delicate time, and it's best to go with the tried and true producers. By paying attention to all details, even such as these, your business will grow to unprecedented heights.

Term Papers and Essays - How to Write Better Papers

What's happening with your college term papers and essays? Unfortunately, that's a question that a lot of student's cannot or do not want to answer. I see students on almost a daily basis who have the term paper blues. Their biggest problem? They just can't seem to get started. They procrastinate and rationalize. They put off doing their assignments until the eleventh hour. These students often succeed in convincing themselves that being able to write good term papers and essays is beyond them or just not necessary. This purpose of this website is to get you started on the road to writing good college term papers and essays. My simple steps in producing better essay papers should make writing papers at least easier if not easy. If you really want to be educated then you will have to learn to express yourself on paper. There is no way around this so adjust your attitude and decide you will learn to write a quality term paper or essay that says something.

Writing good term papers will certainly help you remain in college. Failing English is a major cause for students to wash out of college. You do not have to do this. Use the resources of this term paper site and you can succeed. Take a few minutes and at least see if you can comprehend what I am telling you on how to write great college papers.

Book reports are basically essays on a book you have read. If you have a choice pick a book you might enjoy. If you need to view some quality book reports do a search from one of the search engines on this site. The free college term papers and essays also have books reports for your viewing. What I want to tell you I learned by the school of hard knocks. The information I will provide you works well if you put forth a reasonable effort. The information you will receive by reading the Bullshipper's advice on writing college essays and term papers is concise, simple and straight forward. You will be able to remember what I have to say. Really want to get off to a good start with your essay or term paper? You must or you would not be reading this. Determine the following before you attempt to write. (next column)

Getting Started

What is you essay writing assignment? Do you understand just what your professor or teacher is asking for? As a college professor I have seen many a essay and term paper writing assignments botched up because students failed to do as instructed. If you are having trouble determining just what the essay assignment is then ask your instructor until you are clear as to what is expected. Guessing can get you on a bind. Get to know your essay and term paper subject and just what you want to do with it. Determine just who you are writing for. Define a motive for this writing. Saying your teacher or professor is making you write an essay paper is not a motive. You want your essay to be interesting to a wide audience.

Do not produce an essay without a purpose. The first sentence you are going to write starts like this, The purpose of this paper is to...... You fill in the blanks.

References for a Term Paper or Essay Finding good references for you work is now easier than every with the use of the internet. During my days as a high school student we spent a lot of time searching out essay references the hard way. We had to climb around library bookshelves. We had to tinker with microfiche. We had to take copious notes on 3 X 5 cards. Oh, yes, we used typewriters and/or ink on paper. No one was even thinking of word processing. Here are a few simple steps to learn the subject you are going to write about.

Do your class assignments, read what your teacher tells you to. Do not bluff your professors or teachers. I tried this and it rarely worked. Learn to use the academic search engines. I cannot believe just how many of my students do not know how to do this. When I say academic search engines I am not talking about the common internet search engines such as Google and Yahoo. If you do not know what I am talking about contact your school library and ask them how you can connect to the academic search engines such as the Ebsco Host or the Wilson Web. You will never regret learning how to use them. They are easy to use and contain millions of quality articles on just as many subjects.

Read other term papers. You do not care if the papers are good, bad, or in between, just read other essays that concern the same subject you are going to write about. If you follow my advice on this website you will learn to tell the quality essays and term papers from mediocre essays and term papers. Even poor essays can have good ideas that may help you in your writing. This site has links to thousands of term papers and essays at a very low cost. You even get excepts from each paper. These links point to a real term paper buffet; all you care to read.

A word to the wise. I had three students in one class turn in the same exact essay, errors and all. They copied this essay off a free term paper site. They did not intend to write a decent essay. They decided to take the easy way out. They did not collaborate. Needless to say they got a lot of trouble. Dumb. I hope you take the extra time to produce a quality essay or term paper. The only way to get good at writing is to write. I guarantee this. Remember, "if you take from one author it is plagiarism; take from many authors and its research." (Mizner, W.)

A Few Tips on Watercolour Papers

Probably one of the most important aspects of choosing Watercolour paper is the surface texture as this will either help you or hinder you with your watercolour painting. Watercolour paper is divided into three categories according to the surface of the paper: Rough, Hot-Pressed (HP), and Cold-Pressed (NOT).

Rough watercolor paper, as you'd expect from the name has the most textured surface, or most prominent tooth. It's described as having a pebbly surface with a series of irregular rounded shapes just like a pebbled beach. When using rough paper the paint from a very watery wash tends to collect in the indentations in the paper, creating a grainy effect when the paint dries. Alternately if you dry brush lightly across the surface, you'll apply paint only to the raised parts of the paper, the paint will only touch the tops of the ridges and not in the indentations. Rough paper is generally not a good paper for painting fine detail, but is excellent for a loose, more expressive style of painting.

HP stands for "Hot Pressed" and is the smoothest paper and is suitable for high detail work. Hot-pressed watercolour paper has a smooth surface with almost no tooth. Its smooth surface is ideal for painting fine detail and for even washes of colour. HP is not an ideal surface for beginners as they sometimes have problems with the paint sliding around on the smooth surface.

Cold-pressed watercolor paper is sometimes called "NOT" (as in "not hot pressed"). It's a slightly textured paper and is the most popular as it's suitable for most types of work. Cold-pressed paper is a medium paper, in between Rough and Hot-pressed paper and having a slightly textured surface. Cold-pressed paper is the most commonly used Watercolour paper as it allows for a good amount of fine detail work while also having enough texture to allow a more loose expressive style of painting.

The thickness of a sheet of watercolour paper is measured by its weight. So the greater the weight, the thicker the paper. Watercolour paper is measured in either (lb) pounds per ream or (gsm) grams per square meter. Most papers have both weights advertised as standard. There are 4 standard weights of watercolour paper, these are 90 lb (190 gsm), 140 lb (300 gsm), 260 lb (356 gsm), and 300 lb (638 gsm).

When you use a thinner paper it needs to be stretched, this is done to prevent the paper from buckling or warping when you paint on it. How thick the paper needs to be before it will start buckling does depend on how wet you tend to make the paper as you paint. The best way to decide which is the best weight of paper for your painting style is to experiment with different weights to see, but it's likely you'll find that paper with a weight of 140 lb (300 gsm) or less needs to be pre-stretched.

How to pre-stretch Watercolour paper: If you have chosen a paper of 140lb (300gsm) or less then the chances are you will need to pre-stretch your paper. The reason for pre-stretching is with the lighter weight papers when you apply water it moves and buckles, or "Cockling". This happens when the application of water when painting, will cause one side of the paper to expand slightly, the other side will remain dry and due to the sizing contained within the sheet will not expand. To counteract the papers movement on the wetted side, the paper buckles and warps. This then causes the very unsightly effect of buckling which is not ideal for the finished painting, and is also quite difficult to work with.

1. Immerse your sheet of paper either in a bath of cold water or under a tap for approximately 1 to 2 minutes, this is to allow the fibers in the paper to expand. Take care when handling your paper, ideally before you start wash your hands thoroughly and don't touch the area you intend to paint, this is because the paper is fragile when it's wet and also your finger marks will show up in your wash due to the grease on your fingers.

2. Carefully place your soaked sheet of paper flat on a board.

3. Using gummed tape, stick down all four edges of your paper, you can also staple down your paper but don't use heavy duty staplers as it will be hard to get the staples out which may result in you damaging your paper.

4. Blot any excess water from your paper, ideally use a clean sponge and leave to dry on a flat surface, a flat surface is preferred otherwise the water will drain to one edge and the paper will dry unevenly.

5. Leave your paper to dry at least for a couple of hours, but ideally over night. When your paper is completely dry it will be stretched tightly on the board and when you apply your wash the paper will not move or buckle again.

All Watercolour paper is made with a difference between the two sides, one side is usually slightly smoother and the other side has a slight hairier texture to it. There isn't a right and wrong side because which you use would depend on what you require from your watercolor paper. The smoother side of a paper is better if you're painting a lot of detail, while the hairier side is better if you want to build up colour by using lots of glazes.

The colour of watercolor paper varies from manufacturer to manufacturer and even between the different types of paper made by the same manufacturer. Watercolour paper doesn't just come in white it can range from a warm, rich cream to a cold, blueish white. The difference in colour tones can sometimes be easy to see, but at times it can be so slight that it is hardly evident even when you have two different sheets of watercolor paper next to one another.

One thing to consider when choosing your watercolour paper is that the different colour tones of paper will affect your paintings, as basically your starting your painting with a glaze, so this will have an impact on your painting. A watercolour paper with a slight cream colour can make your colours appear muddy or dull. A watercolour paper with a blueish tint can give your yellows a greenish appearance. When you are buying your watercolor paper, take its colour tint into consideration just as much as you would its texture and weight.

The vision for Paint & ART is something quite different from your run of-the-mill art shop. Most art shops are quite boring places to be in, they're just shops that happen to sell art supplies; they may as well be selling table cloths or spanners. We feel that an art shop needs to be so much more; it needs to be a place of inspiration. Artists are by their nature, creative people, so they desire inspiration; they are always looking for something to inspire them, that little thing that stands out, something that gives them that spark of an idea. That's the feeling I'm hoping to create in our shop, we want an art shop where customers can buy their products from, but at the same time be totally inspired, I want them to come and hang out and just be immersed in the whole experience of the shop, look at the different things going on, look at the art on display, talk about art and ask for advice on the products they are looking to buy.
